Genius Hour is a great motivator to share learning. This learning comes from an interest that is motivated by trying to dig deeper, change thinking or share a knowledge that our students have. Students complete several writing projects throughout third-grade language arts, such as a region report that ties in cross-disciplinary themes from social studies. After thoroughly researching a topic, students also create a nonfiction picture book. Throughout the year, students read books in different genres, individualized to their interests. They also learn editing and revising in a real-world context when they prepare stories for their class magazines.
Math goals include place value understanding for larger numbers, multiplication and division fluency, practical understanding of fractions and their uses, and utilizing measurement, data, and geometric concepts.
Project- and engineering-based science units include weather and weather-related hazards, energy, waves and applications, and life cycles in plants and animals.
World Geography Course
In social studies, third-graders study Michigan history, economics, government, and geography.
Alamo World Geographygenius Hours
The students work weekly on cross-disciplined Genius Hour topics, in which they are able to delve into a real-world issue, often of their own choosing. Genius Hour projects give students another avenue of voice and choice, and that, along with the ability to let children learn at their own pace, is what personalized learning is all about.
